Reading Comprehension Part 1

By no means, I am a good or fast reader. I never liked to read books my entire life and stil do not read much unless it’s required. However, I was able to do well on the DAT RC section because I used this simple method to answer all the questions. I am sure if you have tried to find a good strategy for RC on the SDN, you probably have heard of this method. The method is to NOT read the passage beforehand, but go to the questions first and start answering them right away.

My Strategy in Detail

1. Read the first question.

2. If it is a fact/detail question, skim through the passage and find the paragraph that has relevant information. If you did not find it, skip it.

3. Once you found it, read the paragraph with full attention. (Go to step 6)

4. Answer the question.

5. If it is a tone/inference question, skip it for now.

6. Move on to the next question.

7. Repeat the steps 2-6 for the rest of the questions.

8. By now, you will have read most of the passage. Go back to the skipped fact/detail question first.

9. You should be able to locate them more easily now since you have read most of it.

10. Now, go to the skipped tone/inference questions.  If you have skipped any paragraph, read them now.

11. Answer the tone/inference questions as best as you can.

12. Don’t leave any blanks and move on to the next passage.

Things to note

This method is efficient because although you end up reading the entire passage, you won’t have to read any paragraph more than once if you follow it correctly. I finished the entire RC section with 10 minutes to go and as I said before, I am not a fast reader.

Also, while looking for the answer to a question and you find the answer to a previously skipped question, go back to the question and answer it right away.

The most difficult thing about this method is to stay calm and relaxed. Sometimes, you may not find the right paragraph so easily. But do not panic. Stay calm and move on to the next question. Sometimes, you might have a few questions skipped consecutively. But stay calm still. In order to stay calm, you just gotta practice alot and build alot of experience doing this method.

This method is NOT for someone who wants to reall get like 25 on RC. If you really want that high score, you will already have to be a very fast and active reader. If you are not, just stick to my method. My method is for someone who is not a good reader like me but wants to get over 20 on RC section.

Recommended books: None, just follow my method although you can buy DAT Achiever and TopScore for practice.

That is all for RC section for now. If I remember anything relevant, I will come back and add more.

Time spent writing this post: 1 hour and 20 minutes. Yes, I am a slow writer too (hate english).

  1. Good Job on the Blog man. I think I like your advise with the RC. I took the DAT before and scored a 17. I used the kaplan method so now I will try your method to see if it can work for me.

  2. thank you SOOO much!!! i really appreciate you doing this for us… it is gonna helps A LOT!!!

  3. Your blog really helps me a lot!
I messed up in RC only on last DAT. I am excited to use your strategy for my 2nd DAT.
    One more questions.
Since I want to practice RC with your strategy a lot, do you have any book recommend other than achiever, topscore, and kaplan?
I’m looking for any book that I can keep praticing everyday.
    Thank you!!!

  4. No problem, I just want to help people who are willing to work hard but having some trouble. Well Steve, I personally did not use anything beyond achiever, topscore, and kaplan. So I really can’t recommend any other books. However, I did all the RC section from achiever and topscore at least twice. I know that you will remember a few answers here and there, but I think it’s worth going over multiple times especially since it’s hard to find DAT RC practice questions. Perhaps, if I am not lazy enough, I will come up with some RC practice questions.

  5. Thank you for your blog. I am like you in the fact that I am not a very good reader and only read when I am required to, so I have been apprehensive about RC for a while, but after I read this blog, I tried it immediately and it worked great for me, in fact I boosted my score by 3 points from previous practices that I have done!

  6. I was wondering if you are from Canada or US? because I am from Canada and I am wondering if these strategies are going to help me coz I think we have a different DAT exam

  7. Hi, I am actually from USA. I have no idea how the Canadian DAT is. Sorry~

  8. wow i love this website! thank you so much!!!

  9. I am glad you like it!

  10. Hey, great strategy!

I just have a quick question… Did you jot down some points while reading?

  11. nope

  12. Hi, there, thanks for the method.
By the way, did you read answer choices after reading the question?
and how do you attack choosing 1 correct answer, AKA “EXCEPT” detail question?

  13. by reading the question, you should be able to figure out whether the answer choices will be spread out or clustered together. If they are spread out about the entire passage, skip it and move on. Otherwise, just treat it like any other problem.

  14. Dear acedat, I got one more question, can i use search and find box control +F during the dat exam?
    like mcat?

  15. I didn’t try that personally, but I highly doubt that will work on the real test. You may try thought, got nothing to lose.

  16. Have you tried achiever? Did it help for science section? if it did how was questions were alike?
I have exam in 2 days, but I have limited time, so I am trying to figure out if I really have to go through the achiever. lol.
    THanks.

  17. yes, go through achiever once if you have time. Def. worth it.

  18. this website is amazing! thanks so much for creating it!!

  19. I had No time to go over achiever, but I took DAT today!
TEST BIO CHE ORG PAT RC QR AA
    DAT: 20 19 26 24 15 18 20
    TOP1 18 19 18 15
    TOP2 19 19 21 16
    TOP3 19 19 20 15 23 19
    OR 15 14 14
    KAP1 19 18 23 22 14 24 20
    KAP2 20 19 17 23 15 23 19
    ACH 18 15
    ACH 16
    ACH 16

I really appreciate the ACEDAT’s method in RC. I did really poorly RC in topscore, achiever and kaplan. In addition to that, most of people had about 5 points higher score on topscore or achiever RC than actual DAT RC, so I was really worried. However, I practiced exactly what ACEDAT said above for 3 days b4 the test and I had 17!
ORGOMAN didn’t help me a lot, orgoman is really good for BS questions, such as class of shark is Chondrichthyes. However, the test overall mainly asked basic basic and basic questions.
The math was killer, I am a typical South Korean guy who is good at math. One time, I got 30 in practice. On actual one, with bad luck, I had many questions with long word questions packed with lots of information. Wow I never got 18 for practice, but my point is, it helps if you are good at reading and understanding to solve the problem.

    • Wooju Kim, nice job. Did you try control +F during DAT exam?

      • wow. nice job.
        I am korean too.
I am studying for the DAT now.
I worry about ENG a lot.
If you are ok, can I ask the topics on your DAT?
I just want to know what kind of topics they give.
It will be so helpful for me.
Thank you a lot! and Good luck!

      • I mean the topics on ENG comprehension.

  22. well nice score! you will def get in somewhere wit that!

  23. Wooju Kim, have you tried the box control +F during the dat exam?
    Did it work?

  24. Haha, if it did work I would have gotten 24+ and everybody else too.
Yeah, It is not working. The RC is not complicated. Many questions were solved by find and destroy method. Do Attack those questions first! Also, spend a minute to go through all 3 passages just to see how long they are. Start with shortest and interesting topic. Remember, they all reward the same point!
Let me know if you have more questions!

  25. I really wanna thank from the bottom of my heart for giving the technique for reading comprehension…
It Really work I used to get 15, 16 On practice test but i use ur technique and got 19 On Real DAT. Cant believe myself…
I Follow most of ur technique in all of the section and ended up getting Academic Average of 21 on Real DAT. I am happy with that score N ur awesome….For doing this to us.
Once again thank u very much….

  26. oh wow, that is a really big improvement! I am glad that your DAT went well.

  27. wow. I think it will work for me. I am not a fast reader like you. English is my second language and I try to read as many as articles these days. I will take the DAT in about one month. I feel like I am kind of ready for Science but not for English…
I am so worried about it. I am so SCARED.

Oh, I have a question about the above strategy.
Did you skim the passages first and start to work on questions or without skimming did you start to solve the questions?

    and.. when I practice with some articles, how can I practice to find what I need in the passages without questions? ;;

    Please help me.

    • What I recommend, is look on the question and search for the answer.Do not skim the passage first thats the waste of time. When u look for the question answer u will face lots of topics, words, and sentence that will help to answer the other quesions. The Strategy given in this Website is what u need….. U need patient; don’t worry if u don’t find any answer skip and go to next. for me i didn’t get any answer for first 10 minutes. I was so worried then i remember to be patience and keep on working on the question which are easy to hunt. It really works Just do that U will really get higher score the Important thing u need is PATIENCE….
And for practice i did TopScore And dat Achiever just go through them and don’t look the answer and keep on practicing again and again that really make u used to and easy to hunt for the answer….
      Good Luck….

  28. Hi! I was surfing and found your blog post… nice! I love your blog. :) Cheers! Sandra. R.

  29. Just wondering how long did you spend on each passage?

    • I usually, divide total time by 3 that gives 20 mins per passage. So 20 mins is the best time i recommend for each section. If you realize that u r using more than 20 mins for the single one just go to the next one and come back if u have enough time later. But don’t forget to mark all the possible answers. Also some of the passage u can finish earlier than 20 mins so u can use that time to answer the question that u need to work on….. U may not answer most of the question in 1st passage but others might be easier so i don’t recommend to spent more time for single passage. Even I didn’t get the answer for the first one but i finished the other one early so i use remaining time for the first passage……….
